The Operations group is responsible for the operation of the entire CERN accelerator complex, which currently consists of two Linacs, five synchrotrons and five experimental areas. In addition to the varied proton, antiproton and heavy ion experimental programs, the complex also supplies protons and heavy ions to the Large Hadron Collider LHC and the Operations Group is responsible for LHC operation. In addition to this the group is responsible for the operation of CERNs technical infrastructure. You will join The Beams department BE, responsible for the beam production, beam and accelerator physics, beam diagnostics, radiofrequency, controls and performance optimization for the entire CERN accelerator complex including the LHC. The Operations Group OP, responsible for the operation of all CERNs present and future accelerators, their associated Experimental Areas and for monitoring the overall technical infrastructure at CERN. The Proton Synchrotron Section PS, a dynamic 14strong team that runs the PS, which is at the hart of the CERN accelerator complex and which is one of the synchrotrons of the LHC injector chain. Besides producing beam for the LHC, the PS delivers beam to experiments in the East Area, the neutron time of flight facility nTOF, the antiproton decelerator AD and the Super Proton synchrotron SPS Further details on the PS Section activities can be found at httpsespace.cern.chbedepOPPSdefault.aspx . This position offers you the opportunity to join a multinational team with a range of skills and expertise. You have the chance to broaden your knowledge into new areas of technical specialty and receive specific training and support for professional development. Functions As member of the PS operations team, you will Be part of the 247 shift team that runs CERNs accelerator complex. Oversee the operation of the PS accelerator and the associated Experimental Facilities on a shift basis, ensuring that scheduling and experimental requirements are met while ensuring the application of safety rules. Work closely with accelerator physicists and setup and optimize the accelerator operation and prepare or participate in tests and commission of new particle beams and machine subsystems. Outside periods of accelerator operation, assist the technical infrastructure team with the operation of CERNs technical infrastructure, if required. Outside periods of shifts, and after a training period, take responsibility for software or hardware related development, maintenance andor installation work for one or more of the accelerators in the complex, either under the supervision of an engineer within the OP group or within the framework of a specialized equipment group in the department. After a period of familiarisation and training take on supervisory duties, as required. Your main activities will consist of Monitoring the accelerator and beam production status and act promptly in case of issues arising, in view of respecting the accelerator schedule. Adjusting machine parameters in order to ensure beam characteristics for the experiments are according to the specifications, using a large range of diagnostic tools. Troubleshooting beam physics and technical accelerator related problems, using a range of powerful diagnostic tools, perform data analysis and ensure a solution will be implemented with or without the expert support from the different equipment groups. Taking initiative in the optimisation of the PS accelerator performance individually or in close collaboration with the team of accelerator physicist, by preparing and performing machine tests, measurement and accelerator studies. Qualification required Bachelor in the field of physics, computing, electronics, electricity or electromechanics, or equivalent.
