(Telecompaper) Panasonic is finalising plans to exit the consumer smartphone business in Japan. The company is evaluating options for loss-making operations, such as the smartphone division. Panasonic will stop production at its smartphone factory by March 2014 and has already informed mobile operator NTT Docomo that it will not supply new models this winter, The Nikkei reports. However, Panasonic will continue making smartphones specifically for corporate users and outsourced models for overseas markets, as well conventional handsets for the domestic market. The company is also seeking buyers for its mobile base station business and negotiations are expected to begin soon.
