On July 4, 1999, Michael Carter fell in love with a 21-acre piece of land nestled between Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor on the east side of San Juan Island. Carter - who retired in April from his job as president of Dole Food Company - bought the land at 678 Primrose Lane later that year.
