When the Pittsburgh Athletic Association was launched in the city in 1908, its nearly 200 charter members were a reflection of the region's business and cultural elite, including names like Mesta, Mellon and Heinz. Just a couple of years later, with some 2,500 members and a waiting list of applicants, the group opened a million-dollar clubhouse on Fifth Avenue in Oakland.
