PORTSMOUTH – Twenty years ago prominent Portsmouth native Valerie Cunningham and a small group of dedicated citizens founded what is today known as the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail. When the Trail was established in 1995, its mission was simply to tell the stories of Africans and their descendants who have been a part of the region's history for over 350 years.
