The cost of expanding a South Carolina nuclear power plant could grow by more than $1 billion, utility officials said Thursday, in a blow to a nuclear industry hoping to prove it can control construction spending. SCANA Corp. announced its share of spending for two new reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station could grow by about $660 million in 2007 dollars under claims assessed by the firms building and designing the plant.
