Refinery buyers tip sugar production revival

2013-01-18 09:06:40| Sugar Industry News

An unidentified group of Hungarian sugar-beet producers has exercised their purchase right and bought the former Kaba sugar refinery from French-British-owned Eastern Sugar. The purchase price was not disclosed but it is said that the amount is several hundreds of millions of forints and the contract could be signed in a matter of days. The owners halted sugar production in 2006 and had been unable to sell the 109-hectare site. In 2010 there were plans to transform the site into an industrial park. By that time most of the infrastructure and equipment had been sold, but the remaining roads, railways, industrial and office buildings would have made the plot a perfect spot for an industrial park, the National Development Agency said at the time. A quick move by the Hungarian group became necessary after a Slovakian company recently made a purchase offer. The buyers told regional daily Hajd-Bihari Napl that the Kaba refinery could again become a significant element of domestic sugar production.
