Though radar is the more prevalent object detection system, the lesser-known ladar -- radar that uses lasers instead of radio frequencies -- produces a more detailed result. The problem though, is that current ladar equipment is too inefficient to bring ladar to the forefront. However, with DARPA's new new tiny 2D optical phased array, that could all change.
