Samsung, Google to start monthly Android security updates

2015-08-06 08:51:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics announced plans to start rolling out regular security updates to its Android mobile devices. The security patches will be released over the air about once a month. Samsung recently "fast tracked" a security update for its Galaxy devices to address the Android Stagefright issues, working with carriers to get the patch out quickly. The company said it will start more timely updates, given the importance of quickly addressing major vulnerabilities. Samsung said it's currently in talks with carriers around the world to implement the new approach. In collaboration with operators and partners, more details about the specific models and timelines will be released soon. Google already notifies Android manufacturers each month about potential security issues that may need addressing. Google said it will also start monthly over-the-air updates for its Nexus devices focused on security, in addition to the usual platform updates. The first security update started rolling out 05 August, including fixes for the StageFright issues. The security updates will be offered for the longer of three years from initial availability or 18 months from last sale of the device via the Google Store.
