(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics announced a new eight-core processor for high-end smartphones and tablets. Stephen Woo, president of the System LSI Business at Device Solutions Division at Samsung, presented the Exynos 5 Octa in a keynote speech at CES in Las Vegas, alongside ARM CEO Warren East. This is the first mobile application processor to use ARM's big.LITTLE processing technology based on the Cortex-A15 CPU and the follow-up to Samsung's Exynos 5 Dual. The Exynos 5 Octa features a total eight cores to draw from: four powerful Cortex-A15 processors to handle processing-intense tasks along with four additional Cortex-A7 cores for lighter workloads. Samsung said it offers up to 70 percent higher energy efficiency compared to the previous quad-core Exynos. Brian Berkeley, senior vice president of Samsung Display, also showed off Samsung's latest advances in mobile display technology. The company is working on a successor to the Nexus 10's LCD that will offer 25 percent less power consumption, with the same resolution of 2560x1600 and 300 pixels per inch. In addition, Berkeley featured a smartphone prototype equipped with a curved edge that showed contiguous content along the side of the device. This is based on Samsung's line of flexible OLED displays. Dubbed YOUM, the flexible display uses extremely thin plastic instead of glass, making it bendable and virtually "unbreakable".
