Scientist C Post Doc Earth Science Group HOURS full time LOCATION Leiden CLOSURE 1552021 Are you our new colleague? Are you the ambitious postdoctoral scientist with strong analytical and programming skills that will improve aerosol measurements from satellites, enabling a better understanding and quantification of climate change? You and SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research You will play an important role in the validation and improvement of aerosol retrievals from MultiAngle Polarimetric MAP measurements by the Remote Sensing of Aerosols and Trace gas Products RemoTAP code, developed at SRON. RemoTAP is one of the very few codes worldwide that is capable of performing global aerosol retrievals from MAP measurements. Your improvements of the code will be important for reanalysis of past data sets as well as for data processing of the upcoming Dutch SPEXone instrument on the NASA PACE mission, to be launched in 2023. SRON is the scientific lead for the SPEXone instrument. Your position and team You will be part of the aerosol team in the Earth Science Group ESG of SRON. The ESG consists of approximately 25 scientists permanent, postdocs, PhD students that work on the data processing and interpretation of satellite instruments as well as the definition of new instrumentation and guiding the development. The aerosol team consists of 6 persons working on retrieval algorithm development, data assimilation, and quantification of aerosol radiative forcing from satellites. Your project You will work on the improvement of aerosol retrievals using the RemoTAP code, e.g., aerosol retrievals over snow, retrievals close to and abovebelow clouds, and improvement of surface reflection models. Insights in possible improvement will be gained from synthetic studies and by comparing RemoTAP retrievals from the French PARASOL instrument to ground based measurements and retrievals by an independent algorithm. Part of this work will be carried out in the framework of the ESA project HARPOL Harmonizing and advancing retrieval approaches for present and future polarimetric spaceborne atmospheric missions. This project is a collaboration with the university of Lille and the GRASPsas company. Position requirements We are looking for a person with a PhD in atmospheric physics or similar. Candidates with a PhD in computational science with affinity for atmospheric science are also encouraged to apply. Furthermore, strong programming skills preferably Fortan90 and Python and experience in atmospheric andor surface remote sensing in, particular using polarization measurements, would be a clear asset. Good English language skills speaking and writing and the ability to both work in a team and independently are a nobrainer for us. What we offer The position we offer at SRON is a fulltime position in which you will be employed by NWOI The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Institutes for a period of 1 year. Extension of this period depends on external funding. The salary will be in accordance with NWO salary scale 10 with a maximum of 4.514, gross per month on a fulltime basis depending on your level of education and experience. Compensation for commuting expenses will be provided.
