The activities will be carried out at our customers premises in Garching, Germany. A Senior Software Engineer is required for the preparation of procedures necessary for the data reduction pipelines employed for the scientific instruments of the Very Large Telescope VLT at ESOs La Silla Paranal observatory. The procedures will be implemented in ANSIC into the ESOCPL Common Pipeline Library for use by scientific teams both at the observatory and at the ESO headquarters in Garching. The post of Senior Software Engineer requires at least 3 years of experience in the development of astronomical data reduction applications using ANSIC. Knowledge of the complete software lifecycle from design through to deployment and maintenance is necessary. In addition to these mandatory general requirements, the candidate will also be required to have the following experience A good knowledge of astronomical image and signal processing techniques Statistical analysis of scientific data Familiarity with modern software engineering practices and tools, including SVN and unit testing Observational and data reduction techniques in Astrophysics imaging, adaptive optics, spectroscopy, etc. would be considered an asset The post will initially be for a period of 3 years at the Garching headquarters of ESO, with a possible extension of a further 2 years. The candidate should be fully proficient in English, the working language of ESO, with excellent oral and written communication skills.
