Senior Spacecraft Thermal Engineer RefIRC215177 STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire 28,384 40,926 per annum dependent on qualifications and experience and inclusive of annual allowance About Us The RAL Space Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory develops space and groundbased astronomy instruments for organisations and agencies including ESA, NASA and ESO. The Thermal Engineering Group TEG provides expert thermal engineering for these projects and also manages a facility for production of Multilayer Insulation. We work on a broad range of projects, including the MidInfrared Instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope, the SPICE instrument for Solar Orbiter, Optical Ground Support Equipment for Meteosat Third Generation, Receivers for MetOp Second Generation and the Broadband Radiometer Instrument for the ESA EarthCARE satellite. We are seeking an experienced spacecraft thermal systems engineers to join our group. The successful candidate will have worked in the industry for a number of years, leading thermal design and analysis activities to develop and verify thermal control systems to meet project requirements. About the role You will have responsibility for thermal design, analysis and verification activities to develop thermal control system architectures to meet project requirements. This will include preparing thermal models, analysis by hand calculation and using software, managing thermal testing, correlationreduction of thermal models and writing project documentation. You will be expected to present results to customers. Some travel abroad may be required. About you To join us you will need to have a good understanding of heat transfer processes, strong numerical and analytical skills, and have experience with thermal analysis packages, preferably ESATANTMS. A degree 21 or above in a relevant engineeringphysics subject with experience of thermal system design and analysis in the spacesatellite industry is essential. To support new projects within the group, we are particularly interested applicants with the following specialism and experience Thermal design of groundspace based calibration equipment e.g., backbody cavities, Microwave calibration targets.
