Volkswagen of America's September 18 stop on the sale of diesel models in the North American market took its toll on the beleaguered brand. Total sales rose just 0.56 percent in a month that included Labor Day weekend sales , while most automakers posted double-digit gains and sold more and more profitable CUVs.
