While there is a growing demand for new workers in the alternative fuels industry there is a lack of qualified people to run the facilities. The catalyst for growth is the US Energy Independence and Security Act (HR6) of 2007, which calls for the production of 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2022.The National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is the only organization in the world to offer both classroom training in biofuels and hands-on instruction. The centerpiece of the training is a Simatic PCS 7 distributed control system donated by Siemens. “We wanted a state-of-the-art control system that was representative of the industry,” said Steve Ward, research engineer. “The biggest thing I was looking for was better support. Now we never have any trouble getting help when we need it.”
