Smartphone shipments hit 295.3 mln units in Q2 - IDC

(Telecompaper) The worldwide smartphone market reached a record 295.3 million shipments in the second quarter, up 23.1 percent on the second quarter of 2012 and up 2.6 percent on a very strong first quarter, according to IDC. Emerging markets supported by local vendors are continuing to be the main catalyst for smartphone sales. A broad range of Chinese OEMs more than outpaced the market in the second quarter, led by Huawei, which nearly doubled its shipments in a year. Samsung shipped 74.3 million smartphones in the period for a 25.2 percent market share, down on 77.3 million units and a 32.3 percent share in the second quarter of 2013. Apple sold 35.1 million smartphones for an 11.9 percent share in the second quarter, compared to a 31.2 million units sold and a 13 percent share in the year-earlier period. Huawei shipped 20.3 million smartphones for a 6.9 percent market share in the second quarter, versus 10.4 million units and a 4.3 percent share a year earlier. Lenovo sold 15.8 million smartphones worldwide for a 5.4 percent market share, compared to 11.4 million phones sold and a 4.7 percent share in the second quarter of last year. LG shipped 14.5 million smartphones for a 4.9 percent share in the second quarter, up on 12.1 million units and a 5 percent share a year ago. IDC expects the global smartphone market to pass 300 million units in the third quarter.
