Sony launches online TV service over Playstation

2014-11-13 09:20:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Sony has launched its own online TV service in the US, delivered over its Playstation gaming console. The Playstation Vue service combines live channels with on-demand and catch-up TV content. A cloud-based DVR makes the past three days of popular programming available without the need to schedule recordings, and once viewers tag a favorite show, they will automatically have access to episodes of that show for 28 days. Users can also set their own recordings in the cloud, without storage restrictions. During the invite-only beta launch, Playstation Vue will offer around 75 channels per market, including programmes from CBS, Discover, OWN, Fox, NBCUniversal, Scripps Networks Interactive and Viacom. Exact programming details and pricing will be revealed at the commercial launch, scheduled for Q1 2015. Sony promised a "fair and competitive price that is transparent with no hidden fees or charges". Vue will be offered on a month-to-month basis without any penalty for cancellation, and there will be no equipment or installation charges. The service works over PlayStation 3 and 4 systems and will be available in a beta preview this month to select customers. The phased roll-out will start in New York, followed later by Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. The service will also become available on iPad shortly thereafter, and later on more Sony and non-Sony devices.
