Southwest Airlines raises curtain on new seating and it's about time

Essentially conceding that the new passenger seat that it began rolling out three years ago has been a flop, Southwest Airlines announced it will begin introducing a new, thinner and - most notably - wider seat on aircraft it begins adding to its fleet in mid-2016. The seat arriving on Southwest's new planes starting next year will be 17.8 inches wide, as opposed to the 17.1-inch width of seats introduced as part of the carrier's highly-touted Evolve airplane interior makeover that was first announced in 2012 and slowly rolled out on hundreds of Southwest aircraft over the past three years.
