Location ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany Description Space Weather Space Segment Coordinator in Space Weather Office, Space Safety Programme Office, Directorate of Operations. Duties Under the direct authority of the Head of the Space Weather Office and as part of the Space Safety Space Weather team, the postholder will be responsible for definition, design and implementation of the space segment of the Space Safety Space Weather System. The postholder will in particular coordinate the development of the Distributed SWE Sensor System D3S, related instruments and missions, and also support development of deep space SWE missions including the mission to L5. The main duties involve definition and coordination of the space segment required to collect the measurement data for operational space weather services, in particular managing measurement and system requirements for D3S coordinating D3S measurement requirements with Space Weather Service Coordinator managing instrument, platform and mission development activities for D3S including level 1 data processing identifying and implementing technology developments for the Space Weather space segment supporting L5 space weather mission studies leading selected L5 mission instrument preparatory activities and development supporting preparation of L5 mission Phase CDE implementation supporting overall coordination of the SWE measurement system using spaceborne and groundbased measurement data interfacing with teams in other ESA Directorates for the implementation of space missions, mission elements and technology development activities e.g. instrument prototypes, feasibility studies participating in programme, project and mission reviews and evaluations of procurement packages as required. The post holder will also assist the Head of Space Weather Office with other space segment related tasks, as required. Technical competencies Technical management experience, specifically with challenges arising from both spacecraft and payload development Handson hardware experience Experience in spaceborne optical instrument development Experience in technology development or space mission design or implementation ESA space systems procurement, development and verification processes and standards incl. code of best practices and project reviews Multidisciplinary knowledge of area of responsibility Spacecraft systems knowledge Behavioural competencies Planning Organisation Teamwork Communication Problem Solving Results Orientation Additional requirements Applicants should have a minimum of five years experience of working on space engineering projects. This should include practical work in implementing a spaceflight mission including flight hardware development. Experience in satellite system engineering will be an asset. Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills. They should have the ability to work autonomously, effectively and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment and to define and implement solutions in line with team and individual objectives and project deadlines. Education A university degree Masters level or equivalent qualification in spaceflight instrumentation or space physics. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. The Agency may require applicants to undergo selection tests.
