Sugar muddle

2014-12-23 08:58:24| Sugar Industry News

The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association is trying to convince the government to reduce the support price of sugarcane, increase the price of sugar, ban its import and allow the export of locally-produced sugar at low rates, besides calling for some additional incentives for manufacturers. This amounts to fleecing the growers and hoodwinking the government. The PSMA demand for reducing the support price of sugarcane is based on the claim that sugar mills are not earning any profit. It also claims that the sugar industry can convert only 8.5 percent of sugarcane into sugar. But the industry standard is 13.5 percent. This means that sugar mills are declaring 37 percent less production. This way the industry is stealing money from the growers.
