(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia's board plans to evaluate at its next meeting options to bolster the company's mobile business, including potential mergers and acquisitions, two people with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg. One option that will be discussed at the 11 April gathering is a potential combination with Hutchison Whampoa's 3 Italia, one of the people said. While Telecom Italia could be interested in eliminating a competitor, the company doesn't want to spend cash on a deal and offering stock would dilute investors' interest, the person said. Italian paper La Repubblica reported that Hutchison is also considering the deal. It has hired Goldman Sachs to examine the possibility of merging 3 with Telecom Italia, the paper said without naming its sources. All the companies declined to comment.
