Telecommunications Ground Segment Engineer Overview The UK Space Sector is growing with a target size of 40bn by 2030. The new ESA Centre at Harwell will house 100 staff by the end of 2015, providing an exciting international environment focussed on Satellite Applications and Telecommunications. HE Space is seeking a team of 8 telecomms specialists to support the ESA Atlas programme which provides opportunities for industrial partners to gain flight testing of innovative product and service ideas. As part of this team you will be given the opportunity to work across the project lifecycle from prephase A studies through to design and development of both satellite and ground segment technologies, giving you a unique opportunity to build your experience and develop your interest in satellite telecommunications. Key Tasks and Responsibilities You will be responsible for the management of activities devoted to the design and development of satellite communication systems and ground segment technology and products under the responsibility of the Ground Segment Technology Section including Participate in the design and development of new product and service ideas for telecommunication ground segments. Evaluation the negotiation, monitoring and control of contracts and activities related to technology and product development for satellite telecommunication ground segments. Manage requirements specifications of ground segment elements in accordance with relevant ESA Standards. Prepare technology and product development plans. Preparation of Market Analysis and studies identifying end used needs in future satellite communication ground segments. Support the procurement phase of ground segment elements, reporting on progress and highlighting issues. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree or equivalent qualification in engineering Several years of experience in satellite telecommunications user andor ground segment Understanding of satcom ground segment architectures for broadcasting, broadband, trunking, backhauling and mobile applications Expertise in some or all the areas of o Terminal modem design FPGA and ASIC Communication protocols including quality of service aspects, upper layer techniques in IP and networking, air interface techniques, RF and Microwave including LNAs, SSPAs, TWTAs, filters, frequency converters, Ground antennas for both fixed and mobile satcom systems Definition and implementation of ground solutions for satcom mobile systems experience working in industry Management of development contracts for ground segment products and technology Specific experience in the satellite telecommunication commercial market development is desirable Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage.
