Telefonica, Huawei testing 1 Gbps fibre service - report

2014-09-22 09:12:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Telefonica and Huawei have carried out initial trials on the operator's Spanish network with a view to offering a 1 Gbps download and upload fibre service by 2015, reports business daily Expansion. When launched, the symmetric 1 Gbps service would be ten times faster than the 100 Mbps download service that Telefonica currently offers under its Movistar brand. Upload speeds, meanwhile, would be one hundred times the highest possible theoretical speed available under Movistar's best current offer. According to the report, Telefonica is employing Huawei's Next-Generation PON Evolution (NGPON) technology in the trials, which would allow the operator to offer even faster speeds in the future. In a bid to put pressure on its rivals, especially Vodafone and Orange, Telefonica has already confirmed plans to increase the speed of its FTTH service to 200 Mbps download and upload in the next few weeks. The symmetric 200 Mbps service will replace the current 100 Mbps download/10 Mbps upload service and will be rolled out progressively in urban areas. The only other Spanish operator currently offering a symmetric 200 Mbps service is Jazztel, which is the subject of a EUR 3.4 billion takeover bid by Orange.
