Trai raises estimates for 800 MHz spectrum price

2014-11-27 15:32:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Indian regulator Trai has reiterated its stance on auctioning the entire 800 MHz band to the mobile sector and raised its estimated value for the spectrum. Trai gave an initial recommendation to the government in February, and earlier this month the Department of Telecom asked it to reconsider its advice. Trai said it is still in favour of auctioning all available spectrum in the band, including the unused spectrum held by the state-owned operators MTNL and BSNL. Only BSNL could hold on to some frequencies in parts of the country to support its CDMA services. Trai also noted that the chances of attracting new market participant sin the auction will increase if the government offers contiguous 5 MHz blocks of spectrum. Finally, the regulator said it carried out a fresh valuation of the spectrum based on recent market trends. Compared to its estimates in February, Trai increased the proposed reserve prices for the frequencies. It now estimates prices ranging from INR 110 million in the North East region to INR 4.94 billion Delhi.
