SUMMARY OF 1100 PM AST...0300 UTC...INFORMATION ----------------------------------------------- LOCATION...41.2N 30.1W ABOUT 195 MI...315 KM NNW OF FAIAL ISLAND IN THE CENTRAL AZORES MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...60 MPH...95 KM/H PRESENT MOVEMENT...NE OR 50 DEGREES AT 25 MPH...41 KM/H MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...989 MB...29.21 INCHES WATCHES AND WARNINGS -------------------- CHANGES WITH THIS ADVISORY: The government of Portugal has discontinued the Tropical Storm Warnings for all of the Azores Islands. SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT: None. Interests in Ireland and the United Kingdom should consult products from their local meteorological service for information about potential impacts from Helene in those locations. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM AST (0300 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Helene was located near latitude 41.2 North, longitude 30.1 West. Helene is moving toward the northeast near 25 mph (41 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue with an increase in forward speed during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, Helene should move away from the Azores overnight and then approach Ireland and the United Kingdom Sunday night and Monday. Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Some weakening is forecast, and Helene is expected to be an extratropical cyclone when it reaches Ireland and the United Kingdom. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km) from the center. The Meteorological Service of Portugal reported that a wind gust of 78 mph (126 km/h) occurred in Flores Island when Helene passed to the north of that island. The estimated minimum central pressure is 989 mb (29.21 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Winds should continue to abate in the Azores. morning. SURF: Swells generated by Helene are affecting portions of the Azores. These swells are likely to continue for another couple of days and could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
