DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 900 PM MDT (0300 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Hernan was located near latitude 20.5 North, longitude 107.0 West. Hernan is moving toward the north-northwest near 8 mph (13 km/h). A turn toward the northwest at a faster forward speed is expected on Friday, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest Friday night. On the forecast track, the center of Hernan, along with the strongest winds and heaviest rains, is expected to remain offshore of the southwestern coast of Mexico and the southern Baja California peninsula. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Hernan is expected to weaken to a tropical depression on Friday and to a remnant low pressure area on Saturday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) mainly to the south of the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb (29.65 inches).
