(Telecompaper) The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has completed the transition to a new governance model, ending the US government's control over the internet authority. The United States Department of Commerce and its National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) confirmed their management contract expired 30 September, leaving Icann under a new organisation model based on input from international stakeholders. model. "This community validated the multistakeholder model of Internet governance," said Icann Chairman Steven Crocker. "It has shown that a governance model defined by the inclusion of all voices, including business, academics, technical experts, civil society, governments and many others is the best way to assure that the Internet of tomorrow remains as free, open and accessible as the Internet of today."
