United Airlines pays less at the pump, earns more on the bottom line as 3Q profit soars

United Continental Holdings Inc. said Thursday that third-quarter net income soared to $924 million, or $2.37 per share, compared with $379 million a year earlier. Excluding special items, the company said it earned a record adjusted profit of $1.1 billion, or $2.75 per share.
