The off-gas process is an excellent example of a multivariable process control application. The focus must be on the control issues, not complex process technology that is likely to be proprietary. The simplicity of the off-gas process fits these requirements. The process involves heating air and mixing air streams of different temperatures. But even for simple processes, issues can arise regarding the performance of the process controls. Cecil Smith is president of Cecil L. Smith, Inc., Baton Rouge, La., a firm specializing in automation technology that he founded after leaving the faculty of Louisiana State University. Also cited as one of the 50 most influential people in the field, he teaches courses on control topics and has authored or co-authored 14 books, including "Digital Control of Industrial Processes and more than 100 articles.
