(Telecompaper) Microsoft's Windows Phone continues to gain market share in Europe and has even passed Apple's iOS to become the second-largest operating system in Italy, according to the Kantar WorldPanel. Its latest data shows Windows took 13.8 percent of smartphone sales in Italy in the three months to September, up from 10.7 percent a year ago and surpassing Apple's 10.2 percent. Windows' share increased strongly in the other major markets of Europe as well, reaching 8.5 percent in Germany, 11.4 percent in the UK, 10.7 percent in France and 3.7 percent in Spain. Kantar estimates that Windows now accounts for one in ten smartphones sold in the five markets. Apple's share declined in the three-month period as consumers awaited the launch of new iPhones. Google's Android OS continues to dominate, adding 4.2 percent points of market share compared to the year-earlier period, to reach 71.9 percent. Android's share was still growing strongly in France, Spain and Italy, but was down slightly in Germany and the UK.
