Woolworths's three-year strategy to reinvigorate profit growth is in doubt after the architect of the strategy, chief executive Grant O'Brien, fell on his sword following a deterioration in sales over the last few months. The supermarket giant on Wednesday said it had launched a global search for a new chief executive after Mr O'Brien, 53, told chairman Ralph Waters on Monday night he intended to retire after less than four years in the job.

Coca-Cola Amatil chief executive Alison Watkins is intent on steadying earnings this year even though increasing price competition in supermarkets has made it harder to lift soft drink and bottled water prices. In a break from tradition, Coca-Cola Amatil did not issue a trading update at its annual meeting in Sydney on Tuesday, but Ms Watkins said she was comfortable with profit targets unveiled late last year and was confident that earnings per share would stabilise in 2015 before returning to mid-single digit growth over the next few years.
