Private investigator Dana Cutler must take down a cunning psychopath before he can pull off the perfect crime in Sleight of Hand (Harper), a novel of suspense from Phillip Margolin. Charles Benedict — charismatic criminal defense lawyer, amateur illusionist, and professional hit man — has performed his greatest sleight of hand yet: framing a millionaire for the murder of his much younger wife. When Horace Blair married Carrie, the prosecutor in his DUI trial, he made her sign a prenuptial agreement guaranteeing her 20 million dollars if she remained faithful for the first 10 years of marriage. Just one week before their 10th anniversary, Carrie disappears, and Horace is charged with her murder. Desperate to clear his name, the millionaire hires DC's most ruthless defense lawyer, Charles Benedict. P.I. Dana Cutler is in the Pacific Northwest on the trail of a stolen relic dating from the Ottoman Empire. 04.11: Power Foods for the Brain

2013-03-15 00:36:43| Powells Books Events Calendar

Could your breakfast or lunch be harming your memory? Are you missing out on the foods that could prevent Alzheimer's disease? Everyone knows good nutrition supports your overall health, but few realize that certain foods — power foods — can protect your brain and optimize its function, and even dramatically reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease. Now, New York Times bestselling author, clinical researcher, and health advocate Dr. Neal Barnard has gathered the most up-to-date research and created a groundbreaking program that can strengthen your memory and protect your brain's health. In Power Foods for the Brain: An Effective 3-Step Plan to Protect Your Mind and Strengthen Your Memory (Grand Central), Dr. Barnard reveals which foods to increase in your diet and which to avoid, and shows you specific exercises and supplements that can make a difference. Not only will it help boost brain health but it can also reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and other less serious malfunctions such as low energy, poor sleep patterns, irritability, and lack of focus. This event is sponsored by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

04.11: Brent Hendricks

2013-03-15 00:36:43| Powells Books Events Calendar

In February 2002, hundreds of abandoned and decayed bodies were discovered at the Tri-State Crematory in rural Georgia, making it the largest mass desecration in modern American history. The perpetrator — a well-respected family man and a former hometown football star — had managed to conceal the horror for five years. Among the bodies found at the Tri-State Crematory was that of Brent Hendricks's father. To quell the psychic disturbance surrounding the desecration, Hendricks embarked on a pilgrimage to the crematory site in Georgia. In A Long Day at the End of the World (Farrar Straus Giroux), he reveals his very complicated relationship with the South as he tries to reconcile his love-hate feelings for the culture with his own personal and familial history there, and his fascination with the disturbed landscape.
