Researchers Look to Design of Owl Wings to Make Quieter Wind Turbines
2015-06-22 19:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: A new type of coating for wind turbines inspired by the shape of owl wings may dramatically cut noise associated with onshore wind farms, according to research from the University of Cambridge. The scientists found that an owl's flight feathers have a microscopic down-like covering and numerous other intricate design details that smooth the passage of air over the wing, scattering sound as the owl flies. To replicate the structure, the researchers looked at designing a covering that would scatter...

Intel installs micro wind turbines on HQ roof, for testing, power
2015-06-14 23:23:05| Agriculture - Topix.net
Intel has installed 58 small wind turbines on the roof of their Santa Clara headquarters to help power the building and to test renewables. The turbines are manufactured by JLM Energy, 6-7 feet tall, weigh 30 lbs., and sited on the edge on the building to gather the most wind, which averages 8-9 mph.

How to keep wind turbines turning
2015-05-25 22:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Wind turbines are becoming a familiar feature in the British landscape, and last year nearly 10% of the UKs electricity demand was met by wind power (compared with 1.5% in 2007). The UK is considered to be one of the best locations in the world for wind power, but what happens when the wind fails to blow? The unreliability of wind is one of the most common criticisms of this form of power, but a new study shows that if you arrange your turbines carefully you can almost always catch a breeze. If...
