2014-05-06 22:49:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
NBC: eat waves, droughts, and downpours across the United States are likely to increase according to a White House report released Tuesday -- and experts say all we might be able to do now is prepare for whats to come. "People have this perception of this being an issue that affects our kids but not us, or affects polar bears in the Arctic but not us, and what this report really brings home is the fact that climate change is affecting us right here, today, said Katharine Hayhoe, a lead author of...
Whose Definition Of Sustainability Should We Abide By?

Over 20 years ago, I began to interact with other ranchers who were questioning their practices. We began to ask questions such questions as: • Are our ranches sustainable if we continue to use the current practices? • How far into the future can we go with this method of operation before it will no longer work? • Is this going to improve our soils and rangelands or degrade them? • Can this be profitable long-term?” In hindsight, I think these questions truly dealt with “sustainability.” Strategic Planning For The Ranch read more

Transcendence and Analytics: What If the End of Mankind as We Know It Were a Good Thing?
2014-04-21 15:01:51| TechNewsWorld
I saw the movie Transcendence last week, and it was an impressive telling of what might happen were we to achieve singularity. New York Times: Late one night last August, on the chalk downlands of southern England, Paul Kingsnorth stood in a field beside an old-growth forest, two yurts and a composting toilet. Kingsnorth is 41, tall, slim and energetic, with sweeping brown hair and a sparse beard. He wears rimless glasses and a silver stud in his ear, and he talks with great ardor, often apologizing for having said too much or for having said it too strongly. On this occasion, Kingsnorth was silent. It was the final night of Uncivilization,...
Google invents smart contact lens with built-in camera: Superhuman Terminator-like vision here we come
2014-04-15 14:53:06| Extremetech
Google has invented a new smart contact lens with an integrated camera. By virtue of being part of the contact lens, the camera would naturally follow your gaze, allowing for a huge range of awesome applications, from the basis of a bionic eye system for blind and visually impaired people, through to early warning systems (the camera spots a hazard before your brain does), facial recognition, and superhuman powers (telescopic and infrared/night vision). In related news, Google Glass is publicly available today in the US for one day only (still priced at $1500).
