Google Fiber expands with takeover of Webpass

(Telecompaper) Google is expanding its fibre network in the US with the acquisition of San Francisco operator Webpass. Google said the deal will help accelerate the deployment of fast internet connections for customers across the US. Webpass will remain focused on rapid deployment of high-speed connections for residential and commercial buildings, primarily using point-to-point wireless. The transaction is expected to close this summer, subject to regulatory approvals. Webpass already has tens of thousands of customers across five major markets in the US.

Google Fiber introduces home phone service

(Telecompaper) Google Fiber is adding fixed telephony to its broadband offer in the US. The Fiber Phone service costs USD 10 per month and includes unlimited calls in the US and low rates similar to Google Voice for international calls. Fiber Phone is a cloud-based system, meaning customers will be able to take their number wherever they have internet access, including a mobile phone or computer. Google said it will roll out Fiber Phone in a few areas to start and gradually expand it to all residential customers.
