High-level radioactive tritium found in seawater at Fukushima plant port
2013-08-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Asahi Shimbun: Concentrations of radioactive tritium in seawater from the port of the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant have risen between eight and 18 times in one week, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Aug. 23. It seems highly likely that the contaminated water is spreading into the sea beyond the port. The latest levels are the highest since June, when TEPCO, the plant operator, strengthened its monitoring after discovering that groundwater contaminated with radioactive materials around the No....

Japan: Radioactive Water Tank Leak at Fukushima Worst Since 2011 Disaster
2013-08-23 22:11:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: The seemingly endless torrent of scandals rushing from the damaged nuclear reactors at Fukushima continues with the news that a serious incident is underway at the stricken plant. Once again we see that Fukushimas owner TEPCO is utterly unfit to deal with the ongoing disaster. And the bad news just keeps coming. We have now heard that 300 tons of highly contaminated water has escaped from storage tanks at the site--the worst leak since the disaster began in March 2011. Currently, the situation...
Scientists will use cosmic rays to peer inside Fukushima reactor
2013-08-23 13:31:50| Extremetech
Muons created in the upper atmosphere will let researchers from Los Alamos National Labs see the state of the heavily shielded core of the damaged and dangerous Fukushima reactor. The researchers are using cosmic rays to create what is essentially an X-ray of the core's damage.

Japan: New high-radiation spots found at quake-hit Fukushima plant
2013-08-22 11:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: The operator of Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant said on Thursday new spots of high radiation had been found near storage tanks holding highly contaminated water, raising fear of fresh leaks as the disaster goes from bad to worse. The announcement comes after Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) said this week contaminated water with dangerously high levels of radiation was leaking from a storage tank. A tsunami crashed into the Fukushima Daiichi power plant north of Tokyo on March 11, 2011,...
Japan: Fukushima 'much worse' than reported
2013-08-22 11:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BBC: A nuclear expert has told the BBC that he believes the current water leaks at Fukushima are much worse than the authorities have stated. Mycle Schneider is an independent consultant who has previously advised the French and German governments. He says water is leaking out all over the site and there are no accurate figures for radiation levels. Meanwhile the chairman of Japan's nuclear authority said that he feared there would be further leaks. The ongoing problems at the Fukushima plant...
