A U.S. Air Force veteran and former airplane mechanic charged with attempting to join the Islamic State group in Syria pleaded not guilty Wednesday to terrorism charges. A bearded Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, wearing prison-issued khaki pants and a blue short-sleeved shirt, repeated his full name when asked but said nothing else before Judge Nicholas Garaufis in a New York federal courthouse.

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Exxon Mobil over a 2013 oil spill in Mayflower, finding that he was wrong in granting class-action status and that right-of-way land contracts didn't require the oil giant to maintain its Pegasus pipeline. U.S. district judge Brian Miller allowed two residents in August to represent others who owned property subject to an easement for and physically crossed by the pipeline.
