2014: Export of American Oil Is Contentious Industry Goal After 4-Decade Federal Ban
2014-01-06 08:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
InsideClimate: Emboldened by the recent boom in U.S. crude production, oil company executives and others closed the year by launching a highly public push for the right to freely export U.S. crude oil. The move is a 180-degree change from 40 years of telling Americans that the country needs all the oil it can get to achieve energy independence and to protect consumers and the economy from oil and gasoline price shocks. Federal judge says NSA phone data collection legal
2013-12-30 09:29:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) A federal judge in New York has ruled that the National Security Agency's phone-tracking programme is legal. US District Judge William Pauley issued the decision, saying the programme "represents the government's counter-punch" to eliminate al-Qaida's terror network by connecting fragmented communications, AP reports. In the ruling, the judge noted the September 11 terrorist attacks and how the phone data-collection system could have helped investigators connect the dots before the attacks occurred. He said the government learned from its mistake and "adapted to confront a new enemy: a terror network capable of orchestrating attacks across the world", and the data-collection programme was part of the adjustment. The ruling dismissed a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union against the NSA programme. The ACLU said it plans to appeal.
