With Great Uncertainty, Geologists try to Predict Chance of Big Quake Striking Kansas
2016-01-10 17:15:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Wichita Eagle: Lori Lawrence said she was standing in the hallway of her home near Central and Hillside on Wednesday night when the bedroom door started rattling. It was, she said, the sixth earthquake she's felt in the past two years. Friends filled up her Facebook feed with comments about the latest quake, which was actually two back-to-back quakes, the largest of which had a magnitude of 4.8. It was intense enough that the city of Wichita, for the first time, sent out a team to examine whether any of its...
Oil & gas execs 'pressured' Oklahoma geologists not to reveal fracking-quakes link
2015-03-05 17:26:19| Electronics - Topix.net
Newly-obtained emails reveal that Oklahoma geologists were pressured by oil industry big-shots not to push on with their assessments of possible links between earthquakes in the state and hydraulic fracturing industry, most often referred to as fracking. More than a year since a sharp spike in earthquakes in the region, which coincided with fracking for oil and gas, the Oklahoma Geological Survey say there might be a possible link.

State geologists in Ohio link seismic activity to fracking
2014-04-11 12:28:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: State geologists in Ohio have for the first time linked earthquake activity in the Marcellus Shale basin to hydraulic fracturing, confirming the suspicions of activists pushing for drilling limits in the interest of public health. State Oil & Gas Chief Rick Simmers told The Associated Press on Friday that a state investigation of five small tremors in the Youngstown area last month has found a probable link. He said Ohio is setting new permitting conditions in earthquake-sensitive areas and...

Earths sensitivity to climate change could be 'double' previous estimates, say geologists
2013-12-11 19:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: The sensitivity of Earth's climate to CO2 could be double what has been previously estimated, according to a statement issued by the Geological Society of London. In an addendum to 2010's 'Climate change: Evidence from the Geological Record', the statement notes that many climate models typically look at short term, rapid factors when calculating Earth's climate sensitivity -- defined as the mean global temperature increase brought about by a doubling of atmospheric CO2. It is well known that a...
