EPA awards $4 million in grants for drought research.

EPA is awarding $4 million to four institutions to conduct research to combat effects of drought and extreme events on water quality in watersheds and at drinking water utilities. These grants will provide innovative strategies for protecting water quality and public health during periods of drought. Grant recipients include Clemson University; Water Research Foundation, University of Colorado at Boulder; Public Policy Institute of California; and University of Utah.

Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice announced a settlement with ASARCO that requires the company to spend $150M to install new equipment and pollution control technology to reduce emissions of toxic heavy metals at a large copper smelter in Hayden, Ariz.

Settlement with ASARCO requires company to spend $150 million to install new equipment and pollution control technology to reduce emissions of toxic heavy metals at a large copper smelter in Hayden, AZ. Company will also fund local environmental projects valued at $8 million, replace diesel locomotive with cleaner model for $1 million, and pay $4.5 million civil penalty. Air pollutants should be reduced by at least 8.5 tons/year, and PM emissions are expected to be reduced by 3,500 tons/year.

EPA calls for Presidential Green Chemistry Award nominations.

EPA announced its request for nominations for 2016 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for companies or institutions that have developed a process or product that better protects public health and the environment. Since start of program, EPA has presented awards for 104 new technologies that have reduced more than 826 million pounds of hazardous chemicals and solvents, savings 21 billion gallons of water, and eliminating 7.8 billion pounds of carbon dioxide releases.

BIO Issues Statement on EPA Rule for 2014/2015/2016 RFS.

BIO, in reaction to transmittal of final rules for 2014/2015/2016 Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) to White House Office of Management and Budget for review, claimed EPA will continue to undermine goals and requirements, undercut investment in advanced and cellulosic biofuels, and raise GHG emissions in transportation fuel sector. BIO's Brent Erickson specifically spoke to "EPA's new interpretation of its statutory authority to waive the requirements of RFS statute.
