Google buys HTC assets for USD 1.1 billion

(Telecompaper) Google has agreed to take over staff and assets of smartphone maker HTC for USD 1.1 billion. Google said the takeover will strengthen its hardware business, including the Pixel smartphones on which HTC already cooperates. HTC will continue to make smartphones and VR devices under its own brand.

Google reorganises cloud services, buys Bepop

(Telecompaper) Google its consolidating its cloud businesses into a single group headed by Diane Greene, co-founder and former CEO of VMware, said Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post. Google for Work, Cloud Platform, and Google Apps have been brought together in the unit led by Greene. Pichai wrote, "Only a tiny fraction of the world's data is currently in the cloud -- most businesses and applications aren't cloud-based yet. This is an important and fast-growing area for Google and we're investing in the future." Greene has been a member of Google's board for three years. As part of the reorganisation, Google has acquired Bebop Technologies for undisclosed terms. The company founded by Greene provides tools to build and run complex software applications. Greene's team at Bebop will join Google when the acquisition closes.

Google buys Softcard, partners US operators on m-payments

(Telecompaper) Google has acquired the US mobile payments venture Softard. First started under the name Isis, Softcard was launched by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon to bring NFC-based mobile payments to their customers. Softcard's technology will now be integrated into the Google Wallet. Under the new relationship with the mobile operators, the Google Wallet app, including the tap and pay functionality, will come pre-installed on Android phones (running KitKat or higher) sold by these carriers in the US later this year. No financial details of the agreement were disclosed.
