Smartphone add-ons grow up at CES 2014: Thermal imaging cases, stun gun battery packs, tricorders, and more
2014-01-09 15:50:22| Extremetech
At CES 2014, if you see past the usual slew of new TVs and laptops, there is one big trend that's received hardly any coverage: Smartphone add-ons. While the last few years have seen no shortage of smartphone cases and plug-in gadgets that provide additional functionality, it appears that 2014 will take smartphone add-ons to the next level. At CES 2014, just to name a few, we have seen an add-on that turns your phone into a functional medical tricorder, a case that turns your phone into a 650,000-volt stun gun, and my personal favorite: a case that turns your iPhone 5 or 5S into a thermal imaging device.
CES 2014: Audis laser headlamps will definitely make slow traffic move over when you flash the brights
2014-01-08 20:25:03| Extremetech
In 2013, Audi showed LED headlamps at CES. This year, laser headlamps. No word on 2015, but bring your welding goggles just in case.
CES 2014: Razer shows off wondrously crazy (and sadly unrealistic) fully modular oil-cooled PC
2014-01-08 18:52:47| Extremetech
At CES 2014, Razer is showing off one of the craziest and most beautiful PCs ever imagined: A fully modular PC tower that is cooled with mineral oil. Each of the components, whether they're graphics cards, hard drives, or RAM, is stored within a self-contained pod that can be switched out at any time. Each pod is sealed and contains two self-sealing ports that, when plugged into the system's central spine, allow mineral oil to circulate and keep the components cool. Dubbed Project Christine, the modular PC is currently just a prototype, but if everything goes to plan Razer hopes to have a finalized version of Christine ready for CES 2015.

CES 2014: Sonys new VR headset squares off with the Oculus Rift
2014-01-08 17:26:15| Extremetech
The Oculus Rift is still in development kit form, but for a dev kit that aims to offer virtual reality in the living room for a relatively affordable $300 price tag, the device actually delivers. Your less tech savvy friends may not have heard of the Rift yet -- and it doesn't exactly have an impressive catalog of officially supported software -- but the buzz surrounding the device is strong and loud. In fact, that buzz is so strong and loud that Sony has taken to developing a Rift competitor of its own.
