Encouraging economic investment while reducing phosphorus pollution to local waterways, program saved Commonwealth >$1 million and demonstrated innovative means of meeting Clean Water Act stormwater requirements and Virginia water quality goals. Similar programs are expected to be established around USA.

Biosolids recycling program to reduce chemical fertilizer, improve water quality in city of Toledo

Synagro Technologies, the nation's largest recycler of organic residuals, recently announced details of a five-year biosolids recycling program in the city of Toledo, Ohio, that will improve water quality in the Lake Erie watershed by reducing the use of commercial chemical fertilizer. Toledo's biosolids will be used as a natural fertilizer on farmland, eliminating the need for more than 400 tons of chemical fertilizer, which has greater potential of runoff to rivers, lakes and streams.
