Equinix closes USD 3.8 bln Telecity acquisition

(Telecompaper) US data centre operator Equinix has completed the acquisition of UK-based Telecity for USD 3.8 billion, consolidating its position as the largest retail colocation provider in Europe. Originally announced in May as a recommended cash and share offer, the transaction was approved last week by Telecity shareholders and UK regulators, having obtained the European Commission's green light in November. As part of the deal, Telecity chairman John Hughes will be joining the board of directors of Equinix, and Equinix EMEA president Eric Schwartz will serve as the head of the combined regional business in EMEA.

Equinix to buy Japan's Bit-isle for JPY 33 bln

(Telecompaper) Data centre operator Equinix is expanding in Japan with the acquisition of Tokyo-based Bit-isle. The offer of JPY 922 per share cash values Bit-isle at JPY 33.3 billion (USD 280 million). The acquisition of Bit-isle will further strengthen Equinix's position in Asia-Pacific, the company's fastest growing region, as well as improve the company's market position in Japan. The integration of Bit-isle and Equinix's existing operations in Japan will create the fourth largest data centre operator in Japan. Equinix will gain five data centres in Tokyo and one in Osaka in close proximity to the existing Equinix International Business Exchange data centres in Japan. After the completion of the TY5 site in Q1 2016, Equinix will have a total 10 IBX data centres in Tokyo and two in Osaka.

Shares of data center hosting outfit Equinix are down $2.39, or 0.9%, at $267.76, after Citigroup 's Michael Rollins cut his rating on the shares to Neutral from Buy, while maintaining a $276 price target, arguing the valuation has gotten rich relative to competitors such as Digital Realty Trust and CoreSite . The shares are too rich relative to those two, but also relative to tower leasing companies such as American Tower : EQIX shares at 16x our AFFO est.
