Last week in telecoms: Sunrise crossing swords with Freenet over UPC Schweiz

(Telecompaper) Quarterly figures and acquisitions determined the mood in the European telecom sector last week. In the end, the price of the TPSI European Telecom Services index fell by 0.5 percent over week 34, while the EuroStoxx 50 index rose by 0.2 percent. Syn (Vodafone Iceland) was the largest downer with -14 percent, the Italian Tiscali the largest gainer with +21 percent. Apart from these microcaps, the Polish Play (-6.2%) and the Spanish MasMovil (+ 8.8%) were the biggest outliers.

Sunrise suspends Freenet board members, to push ahead with UPC takeover

(Telecompaper) Swiss operator Sunrise has rejected shareholder Freenet's opposition to its planned takeover of UPC Switzerland and said it will exclude Freenet's board representatives from further discussion of the deal, amid concerns they may have breached their fiduciary duties. This follows Freenet's announcement that it plans to vote against the proposed rights issue to finance the takeover.

Sunrise grows service revenues, EBITDA 3% in Q2, sees higher synergies from UPC deal

(Telecompaper) Swiss operator Sunrise said that its service revenues grew by 3.1 percent in Q2 as a result of an increase in the number of subscriptions for mobile postpaid, TV and internet, and B2B revenue growth. However, total revenues fell by 1.7 percent year-on-year to CHF 455 million, due to reduced hubbing and mobile hardware sales, both carrying low profitability.

Freenet says to vote against Sunrise rights issue for UPC takeover

(Telecompaper) German operator Freenet announced it will vote against Sunrise's planned share issue to finance the takeover of UPC Switzerland. Freenet is the largest shareholder in Sunrise with a 24.5 percent stake. An EGM is planned for this autumn to vote on the CHF 4.1 billion rights issue.
