KPN grows market share to 28% of Dutch TV subscriptions

(Telecompaper) KPN continues to grow its share of the Dutch TV market, at the expense of cable operator Ziggo. KPN added 0.4 percentage points in the third quarter to take 28 percent of subscribers, while Ziggo lost 0.5 percent points for a share of 52.8 percent, according to Telecompaper's latest quarterly report on the Dutch Television Market. Ziggo is struggling to halt the steady decline in cable's market share, according to the researchers. Its new Ziggo Sport channel, launched exclusively for Ziggo TV subscribers, is expected to help slow its loss of customers and could provide a boost to growth in digital TV subscribers.

(Telecompaper) 5G mobile subscriptions are forecast to reach 150 million by 2021, according to a report by Ericsson. ICT could enable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the current carbon footprint of the US and EU combined by 2030, the same study said. South Korea, Japan, China and the US are predicted to lead with the first, and fastest, 5G subscription uptake. 5G will connect new types of devices, enabling new use cases related to the Internet of Things (IoT). the transition will open up new industries and verticals to ICT transformation, the study said. Researchers noted a significant increase in mobile video consumption, which is driving around six times higher traffic volumes per smartphone in North America and Europe for the 2015 to 2021 period.
