Australia's NBN tops 5 mln household connections, 3 mln use higher speed plans

(Telecompaper) Around 5.2 million Australian households are connected to the NBN, and nearly 60 percent are subscribed to higher speed plans, according to a report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The report shows that NBN residential broadband connections increased by 8.5 percent in the March quarter, up from 4.8 million at end-2018.

Dish buys back satellites from EchoStar in all-stock deal worth USD 800 mln

(Telecompaper) Dish Network has agreed to buy EchoStar's Broadcast Satellite Service (BSS) business in an all-stock, tax-free transaction worth USD 800 million. The operations include nine direct broadcast satellites and certain key employees responsible for satellite operations, licensing for the 61.5-degrees orbital slot, and some real estate properties. In return, Dish will distribute 22.9 million of its shares to EchoStar stockholders.
Orange to acquire cyber security provider SecureLink for EUR 515 mln

(Telecompaper) Orange has announced an agreement to acquire European cyber security specialist SecureLink from Investcorp, in a deal that values the company at EUR 515 million. The move follows the acquisition of UK-based cyber security company SecureData earlier this year, to support growth at the Orange Cyberdefense division in Anglophone countries. Subject to customary closing conditions, this latest deal is expected to be finalised in the third quarter, or at the end of the second quarter.

Telefonica to sell 11 data centres to Asterion for EUR 550 mln

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has reached an agreement to sell 11 of its data centres to investment fund Asterion for a total of EUR 550 million, confirming recent reports. The transaction covers 11 data centres with an installed service capacity of 29 MW located in Argentina (2), Brazil (2), Chile (1), Spain (2), Mexico (1), Peru (2) and the US (1) and also includes the signing of a long-term housing services agreement to the Telefonica Group, allowing the company to maintain its commercial offer. The operation does not include the sale of servers owned by Telefonica, or the management and access to customers hosted on them.
Xiaomi reports over 27.5 mln smartphones shipped in Q1

(Telecompaper) Xiaomi announced preliminary smartphone shipments for the first quarter of over 27.5 million. The company issued a statement after several market researchers suggested the company saw a big slump in sales in Q1. Xiaomi said that information is "inaccurate and unfair, and deviates from our actual performance".
