Corn Planting Can Catch Up But Summer Supplies Will Be Tight

2013-05-14 02:00:00| ThePigSite - Industry News

US - Last Friday’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) for May from USDA indicate new crop production and 2014 carryout levels are largely in line with pre-report expectations. Only the soybean crop (raised 1.2 per cent) was more than one per cent different from the average trade guess, writes Steve Meyer in the National Hog Farmer.

How have your corn planting intentions changed?

2013-05-13 22:10:36| National Hog Farmer

Last year, some farmers started planting corn in March and were finished by early May. This year, of course, continued wet conditions have stalled planting attempts and left much of the Midwest far behind in efforts to get underway. Given this scenario, how have your corn planting intentions changed? I still intend to plant my normal amount of corn and beans. I'm planning to switch to planting early maturing corn varieties. I am waiting to see if the weather shifts before changing plans. I expect to plant less corn and more beans to compensate.

By Steve Meyer, Paragon Economics, Inc., Adel, IA Last Fridays World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) for May from USDA indicate new crop production and 2014 carryout levels are largely in line with pre-report expectations. Only the soybean crop (raised 1.2%) was more than 1% different from the average trade guess. Corn, wheat and soybean carryout stocks (i.e., remaining at the end of the marketing year) for 2014 were all above the midpoints of their respective ranges, but not by enough to have large impacts on prices for now. read more
