Amazon agrees EUR 100 mln settlement in Italian tax case

(Telecompaper) Amazon has become the latest US internet giant to agree to a multimillion euro payment to settle its tax affairs in Italy after the local tax authority announced a deal to settle a long-running dispute. In a statement, Italy's Agenzia delle Entrate confirmed that the company has agreed to pay EUR 100 million to settle outstanding tax claims dating from 2011 to 2015. The deal meant the case was now closed, paving the way for "the correct taxation in Italy for activities related to our country," said the agency. Amazon subsequently added: "We have reached an agreement with the tax authorities on historical matters and remain focused on providing a great shopping experience for our customers in Italy, where we have invested more than EUR 800 million since 2010 and created over 3,000 jobs."

Vodafone Italia launches EUR 90 mln Milan 5G project

(Telecompaper) Vodafone Italia has officially inaugurated its project to test 5G technologies via the 3.6-3.8 GHz band in the city of Milan. At an event held in the Palazzo Marino city hall and attended by mayor Giuseppe Sala and Italy's undersecretary for economic development in charge of telecommunications Antonello Giacomelli, the company's CEO Aldo Bisio said Vodafone will be working with a total of 28 partners on the EUR 90 million trial to test the full potential of 5G. The network will cover 80 percent of the city and surrounding metropolitan areas by the end of next year and 100 percent by 2019.

Atos makes EUR 4.3 bln bid for Gemalto

(Telecompaper) Gemalto said it has received an unsolicited takeover bid from Atos worth EUR 46 per share in cash, which it will carefully review and consider. The offer was submitted on 28 November and will be valid until 15 December. Atos put the total bid price at EUR 4.3 billion, saying this represents a premium of 36 percent over Gemalto shares at close on 11 December and 42 percent over the company's one-month weighted average price. The company noted that the buy would be entirely financed through existing cash resources and fully committed external debt.

Orange expects investment to peak at EUR 7.4 bln in 2018, before declining from 2019

(Telecompaper) Orange reaffirmed the priorities outlined in the 'Essentiels2020' five-year strategy, launched in March 2015, and provided more detailed financial targets for the years to come at its Investor Day in London. The group said it plans to reach a peak investment spend of EUR 7.4 billion in 2018 and expects this to decline from 2019. It is guiding for adjusted EBITDA growth of around 2 percent in 2017, with an acceleration in 2018 and positive growth across 2019 and 2020.
