Verizon continues to make progress with its copper-to-fiber migration strategy. The service provider, according to a series of FCC filings, is retiring copper network facilities in White Plains, N.Y., Pittsburgh, Falls Church, Va., and Providence, R.I. Similar to other markets like New York City , when the migration is completed Verizon will no longer offer services over copper wires and maintain those facilities.

Verizon likely frontrunner for government's FirstNet project

Evercore adds its voice to the chorus that says Verizon has the lead on AT&T to build out FirstNet, the government's planned public-safety wireless broadband network. FirstNet's board is reportedly looking at only "national deployment" offers from companies that respond to a request for proposals due out by year-end -- which means it likely won't be split among the big four wireless firms.
